Screening helps to determine whether a child might benefit from speech/language services and is often the first step of the evaluation process. The screening provides the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) with a brief glimpse of the child’s speech, language, social, and literacy skills. It may include a parent questionnaire, needs assessment, environmental observation, and skills checklists. This provides an initial impression of your child’s current skills.
The goal of screening is to determine if your child has an appropriate understanding and use of language, production of speech sounds, attention, and social skills with peers. Based on the results of the screening, further exploration may be needed and a more comprehensive evaluation may be recommended.
